Travelling around the holidays can be fun and exciting but can also be stressful. The same is for our pets. This can be challenging to organize and prepare for. It can also be challenging when leaving them behind.
There are multiple ways to travel with your pet. Some being more stressful for your pet than others. All pets are different. Just because one of your pets travels well in a car does not mean your dog will. Here is a list of ways to travel and how to keep your pet at ease as much as possible so they can enjoy the holidays as well.
Car: This can be the safest transportation method for most pets, but there are always exceptions. This is one of the most reliable because you can keep an eye and turn around if need be. Be sure to keep your pets buckled up as well while on the road.
Flying: Before bringing your pet on an airplane, be sure to check with your airline to determine what proper documentation you will be required to carry with you the day of travel. This paperwork may be requested from your veterinarian so calling ahead will save you some stress. When booking your flight, research airlines to see which one will fit your pet’s needs. The least amount of travel time for your pet, the better.
Do not forget these:
- Any pet identification, vaccines records & medical records (for any condition your pet may have)
- Comfortable bedding
- Collar & leash
- Plenty of food and water (Expect the unexpected when travelling!)
- First Aid kit
- Pets medications
Conclusion: It is always better to be safe than sorry. Do not be afraid to contact your veterinarian for recommendations as they know your pet best. They will also help you with any required documentation you may need for travelling. Have a wonderful trip!
